CONTEXT
The
setting is that of the Aeolian Islands. The pearls of basaltic
lava situated in the lower part of the Tyrraenum Sea.
The Climate is determined by the constant blowing of a light mistral
wind that generates an optimal breeze from spring to late autumn.
The vegetation is typical Mediterranean bush: from the month of
April there is an explosion of colours and an intense aroma of
broom, caper bushes and Jasmine Apreads through the streets.
The sky at night, competes with that of the tropics thanks to
the absence of city lights even a non-expert eye immediately recognises
Venus, Little Bear and the other major constellations in the northern
hemisphere.
The gastronomy is characterised by superb fresh fish, unique recipes
and by sweets with a long tradition. The finishing touch is represented
by the famous “Malvasia”, wine still produced following
tradition by drying the grapes on trellis made of cane. Free time
is the only thing missing: swimming, sun bathing, boat excursions
to the islands, scuba diving, visits to the local wine producers,
day trips in the shade at the ferns, fishing by night… There
is no free time left for the movies, theatres and discotheques…,
which don’t even exist! The Sea can be enjoyed either on
the pebble beaches or on the dinghies that can be hired at the
small but well equipped touristic docks.
The Island is Salina, in the midst of the Aeolian Island, close
to Panarea and Stromboli on one side (30 minutes by hovercraft)
and to Filicudi and Alicudi on the other. It can be reached from
Milazzo in ½ hours by hovercraft or in 3 hours by ferry-boat.
If you don’t come by car, you can hire a car or a motor-scooter.
